Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gaming Commission, Lamtiig Apanga, has affirmed that the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) chances of winning the upcoming Kpandai parliamentary rerun will be strongly influenced by the performance of President John Dramani Mahama over the past 10 months in government.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, November 25, he described the court’s decision as a welcome development that aligns with the party’s optimism going into the polls.

“We need to welcome this development. It is good, and it is also a reflection of the hope that we have in winning the election. Our win for the rerun will be a reflection of the performance of the government. The fact that the government promised that he would run the administration with 60 ministers, which he has done, and also his efforts to fight galamsey all prove his competence.

“We welcome this development, so we wait for what the Speaker of Parliament will do and the EC as well. The EC has been served notice for the rerun.”

His comments come after the Tamale High Court ordered a fresh parliamentary election in Kpandai, directing the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct the rerun within 30 days.

The ruling, delivered by His Lordship Emmanuel Brew Plange, followed a legal challenge filed by former MP and NDC parliamentary candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who contested the election of Matthew Nyindam as Member of Parliament.

Mr Wakpal argued that the December 7 parliamentary election in Kpandai was invalid due to significant irregularities and inconsistencies captured in FORM 8A (Pink Sheets) across 41 out of 152 polling stations. The court upheld concerns of compromised credibility in the voting and collation processes, prompting the order for a rerun.

Meanwhile, incumbent MP Matthew Nyindam says he remains unfazed by the court’s directive and is ready to contest again should the legal processes demand it.

The Electoral Commission is expected to announce modalities for the fresh poll in the coming days.
