The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the Ministry will supply only locally sourced seeds to farmers starting in 2026.
Speaking to journalists during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, November 24, the Minister emphasised the link between food sovereignty and national food security.
“Without food sovereignty, there can never be food security. We recognise the immense potential of our research institutions in seed research, development and testing. The ministry stands ready to collaborate with them to work towards food sovereignty. From 2026, the Ministry will only supply locally sourced seeds to the Ghanaian farmers,” he said.
The move is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic agricultural production, reduce dependency on imported seeds, and support local research institutions in developing high-quality seed varieties for Ghanaian farmers.
